In this current sneaker market, nothing’s hotter than a hyped-up collaboration that brings together the best of two worlds. Kanye West with the Adidas Yeezys, Off-white with the Nike Ten and Travis Scott with the Air Jordan 1 are just some of the prime examples. But if you’re curious about the most popular sneaker collaboration of the year, then Lyst’s annual Year in Fashion index has the answer: With a spike of 344 per cent rise in searches, the Sacai x Nike LDF Waffle sneakers has emerged as the clear winner.
First dropped in March this year, the shoe sees the coming together of two of Nike’s previous hits: The Nike Waffle Racer (1973) and the Nike LDV (1977). Sneaker geeks would know that the Waffle Racer was the shoe that changed things for Nike as a brand. Bill Bowerman, the co-founder of Nike, had a eureka moment when he realised that the grooves made with a waffle iron provided to be the best base for running on any surface. On the other hand, the LDV became a revolutionary long-distance running shoe of its time by featuring a lightweight low-top with a simple and intuitive design.
Fast-forward to 2019 and Sacai mashed the two together in a design that features double everything. So two tongues, two laces, two soles and two swooshes.
Funnily enough, the collab even had two release dates – one that got scrapped and the other official one. And it has LeBron James’ stamp of approval. Of course, if you want to cop a pair now, then you’re a little too late to the game. The pair’s sold out everywhere. Your best bet is the sneaker after-sale market — like StockX. The downside though? For a pair that originally retailed at $140, the lowest ask now is $450.
